What exactly is a virtual world?
A virtual world is a computer-generated, three-dimensional representation of a setting in which the user of the technology interacts in that kind of world. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have used virtual worlds as a way to collaborate, visualize data, educate, and create content. Virtual worlds have shared space which allows a lot of users on at the same time. They also have graphical user interface which makes everything 3D and all the interaction takes place in real time. Most virtual worlds allow you to alter, develop, and built things. They have persistence, meaning the world continues on even when other users aren’t logged on. Most people develop a group, club, or clique, etc. when they are a part of a virtual world.
- Virtual worlds are also called "digital worlds".
- Among the earliest virtual worlds implemented by computers were virtual reality simulators.
- The world must continue to exist even after a user exits the world, and user-made changes to the world should be preserved.
- Participants have a limited time in the virtual world, as in the real world, which they must divide between task such as collecting resources, practicing trade skills, or engaging in less productive fun play.
- Virtual worlds offer advertisers the potential for virtual advertisements.
- The number of people using virtual worlds is increasing at a rate of 15% every month and this growth does not appear to be stopping or slowing down anytime soon.
- Some virtual worlds have off-line, real world components and applications.
- A virtual world allows us to recreate a familiar environment from the "real world".
